Three parts love and seven parts forgiveness

Who says a wedding cake has to cost hundreds (or thousands) of dollars? For under $25, some friends of ours got a beautiful, whimsical and delicious wedding cake that they'll never forget. Leonard and Caireen recently got married, and being an intimate affair (only six guests, plus the bride and groom) I was happy to provide the photography as well as the cake. The night before the wedding I told Caireen about our having a croquembouche at our wedding after she joked that having doughnuts would be a laugh. I demanded that she let me build her a tower of pink doughnuts for her wedding cake. She was tickled.

The morning of the wedding I called Acme Doughnuts, located a few blocks from my house (their website has obviously just been thrown up from a template and is not useful yet), and was delighted that they needed no more than a couple hours to hook up two dozen doughnuts. They even made pink icing from scratch, when it's not normally one of their toppings (the nice gal whipped some up by mixing berry juice with white icing). Due to my no-notice call, they could only do a dozen of the raised doughnuts, so the order was supplemented with a dozen cake doughnuts. A few hours later Scott was able to pick them up and paid only $18. I also sent him to our neighborhood fancy grocery store for pink roses ("the tiny kind, if they have them"). The flower lady looked at him funny when he asked for baby pink roses, but that's her problem. For $5, a regular plate of doughnuts was transformed into something rather special.

Never be afraid to think outside the box. Or inside it, if it's a box of doughnuts.

Love that idea. Even thoughI aspire to have a cake biz, I know its not all about the cake and wedding, but the love you haveand having good friends and family to share it with.

As a former wedding cake decorator, it almost pains me to offer anything besides the traditional. But I'm also all about the easy these days, so your pink donut tower is a great alternative.

Mine'll be cupcakes, cuz I just can't bear to stray too far.

Perfection! I just loved the idea here - my niece was married over the weekend, and one unusual touch she and her groom did was have an "indoor picnic" as a rehearsal dinner (which everyone was invited to) and the bride and groom served all the guests to say thank you for celebrating with them. I loved that, too!

Awwww, that's lovely. We're planning on doing tiers of cheese decorated with figs and flowers. Because, really, I can do without cake but I CAN'T do without cheese. What a whimsical and pretty-in-pink slice of celebration!

Ooooh that looks delicious.

So cute! I will have to add this to my list of wedding ideas; easier than a cupcake cake, too:)

That looks fantastic! Those doughnut makers should be proud of themselves for being so accommodating. And those are really gorgeous roses!

That looks beautiful ... I've never seen the humble doughnut look so elegant! Great call on the roses :)

Let's face it--many people would rather have a fresh donut than a piece of traditional wedding cake! It's amazing how cute your creation looks, dressed up with some pink flowers. Very fun idea, and not just for a wedding. I can see that concept at a brunch, etc., as well.

Love your blog!

That really is lovely, Heather.

Hope you & Cletus are feeling well these days.

Jenn - Thanks! It was either this or a drive to Saint Cupcakes for a couple dozen dots (the bite-sized cupcakes). :)

Courtney - Oh, come on. It is totally about the cake.

Brookie! - It was 100 degrees that day - I don't know that traditional buttercream would've even stood up. Cupcakes are always fantastic and delicious, if you have to be a purist. ;)

Denise - Thanks!

Jen - Aw, what a sweet idea! We did a German cookout at our house for our rehearsal dinner - brats, homemade German potato salad, and lots of good, strong beer. ;)

Tina - That is a fabulous idea! And it's a poignant statement about marriage - I can't imagine a life without cheese.

Emily - There is nothing quite like a plate of pink doughnuts, is there?

Sheila - It is way easier than cupcakes, and perfect for hot, summer weddings.

Alicia - I gave them a call yesterday to thank them and give them permission to use my photos on their website (should they want to).

Muneeba - Tiny tea roses just added the special touch to make the doughnuts look like more than doughnuts. :)

Jane - Amen to that! Plus it was so cute to see the smartly-dressed bridge and groom shoving pink doughnuts into each others' gobs.

Syd - Aw, thanks! We are doing great.

Husband and Self were the very proud recipients of stunning doughnut ensemble from your multi-talented host. Thanks Heather, it was delish, and every good new Mr & Mrs should start their married life with such a tasteful pig-out sesh. Do it!

Great idea. I love seeing offbeat cakes at weddings and this one definately "takes the cake!"

My wedding cake was something reminiscent of something you'd see in a Dr. Seuss book. It was awesome.

So is this. LOVE IT.

Brilliant! I went to a wedding once where they made a cake out of tiers of cupcakes. I have to say I like the creativity of this one ever more though. Only thing that would have been more impressive is if you had figured out a way to work bacon into it somehow.

Fantastic idea, Heaths. You crack me up - it looks gorgeous!

What an awesome idea! Totally solves the "gorgeous-but-nasty" wedding cake problem. And you can use any leftovers for breakfast the next day :)

Seriously, though -- that's inspired.

Aww..that's sweet. It's fun to do things non-traditional for parties like cupcake towers or cream puff towers or doughnuts.

I still have to giggle a little and think of that photo that goes around the 'net now and then of "redneck wedding cake" where tiers of hostess cakes are artfully presented.

If only Brooke had let me do this. I swear to god, I never want to look at another cupcake again.

Just beautiful.

Not sure I can think of a more perfect wedding cake, to be honest...

Cupcakes are so, like, over...
